Is it time to bring back mental asylums?

Thats not how it would work. Mental health treatment is very advanced and effective. I have spent 25 years working in 4 mental units.
Some people need life long commitments. That doesn't mean they live in a an institution. Many cases they can be treated out patient but must be mandated to accept it. This ends the homeless problem overnight.

Some are so disordered they need an institution. We dont wear uniforms or use straight jackets. Treatment is very empathetic and social needs are respected.
We can take the violent ones off the street and save lives
I think you’re replying to a bit of sarcasm.

In any case, if we know that a person poses a risk to himself (herself) or to others because of an identifiable mental health problem, we shouldn’t treat these folks as criminals. Jail isn’t the answer.

But isolating them in a secure mental health facility while they get actual professional treatment as needed is acceptable. And it wouldn’t come without real financial costs.

But that’s appropriate spending.

The problem is even when committed they can refuse treatment after a short period. Consider how much we pay now to support the homeless and all we get is crime and poop on the streets and they are all crazy. We can treat many out patient and they dont have to stay in an institution.

That is a problem. But it can be remedied.

Maybe they need to be held in. I don’t blame them at all for having serious mental illnesses, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they must have freedom to endanger others while they get treatment.

It is an ugly set nod options. But maybe society at large deserves to be considered with greater weight.

Yes, not necessarily for TDS victims but we have to get the nut cases off of the streets. In my city, we've had 3 bicyclists stabbed by homeless people in ONE WEEK! One died. Enough is enough get them off of the streets. We know how to make mental institutions better than they were in the 60s.

I've been saying we need mental institutions back in this nation, along with chain gangs, which keep the prisoners in better health, also we wouldn't need to bring in illegals to pick our crops.

Exactly. Some of these people's mental issues are drug related, some are not. Both issues require separate methods of at least trying to fix the issues with these people.

Lock up asylums are never coming back. I blame nurse Rached.
