Is it ever ok to laugh at disabled people? Yes!!!!!

But if they want to be treated like everyone else...

People laugh at able bodied people when they are funny, if disabled people want to treated the same, they have to be okay with people laughing at them because they are funny...

Absolutely right, Noomi! All this talk about how to act or not act around disabled people just makes me want to avoid them! Why can't I just be myself around them? Seems like they're actually asking for special treatment.

And, by the way, I am a disabled person. I am agoraphobic. Those of us with mental disorders like this have it really tough, because people don't sympathize that much. If you met me, though, you would never know I had a disability...unless I was forced into the situation where I have problems.

I love it when I'm checking out at the grocery store and the checker asks if I want to donate to disabled people. If I'm in an onnery mood I say, "I'm disabled. When is somebody going to give ME some money?"
So you are agoraphobic? Are you fearful of being in public places like shopping malls? I happen to know
someone whose behavior has perplexed me, in that it is difficult for her to go to public places where crowds are present. I know that she occasionally sees a therapist, possibly this is one of the reasons for which see seeks professional help.

Panic attacks are not unusual. I have a friend who is completely normal, but going places alone can overwhelm him. It can be as simple as a walk through a grocery store.

You may remember that the subject of panic attacks was explained to America every week on The Sopranos. You may remember the scenes between Tony Soprano and Dr. Melphie. I think a service was done to the television viewer within the script of the show. The more mental health is explained as something not to be afraid of the more people will get help. We all need a little help from time to time, and should not be ashamed of it.

I still can't get over the great job James Gandolphini did developing the character of Tony Soprano.
Smart guy. Gandolfini made his money and got out of the business.

The FX channel airs the Jim Jeffrie's comedy, "Legit" where a wheel chair person is prominent character. Disabled groups praise the show for treating disabled people like everyone else. FX's 'Legit', Jim Jefferies Embraced by Disabled Community

The disabled character is just as funny as any other cast member. It has long been a goal of the disabled to be treated as part of the community as a whole, not a minority group to be hidden from view. Set your DVR for "Legit" on FX. Meanwhile here are some clips.

As the National Downs Syndrome finds the use of the word "Retard" in this movie offensive, then so do I. It is up to each group to make it clear what is offensive to them, and up to the rest of us to go along in good faith. I will not see this film.

Back in the 1950s "Colored" was offensive to blacks, and they told us they prefer the term "Negroe." As time went on they preferred the term "African-American" and now some, I am told, do not like it. "Black" is the preferred term today, based upon my information. But, that too could change tomorrow morning. Language is an evolving thing.

A little presumptuous of them to feel they are the voice of all retards

It's okay to laugh with, not at, disabled people.
There are exceptions to every rule. For instance, if I had the chance to meet the Ft Hood shooter I would start telling handicap jokes and laugh at him.

Actually it is not presumptuous at all. They are the leading national organization for Downs Syndrome, and the remark was directed specifically at Downs. Whom else to better speak? Again, this is an area for caution as disabled folk reach for new frontiers. I believe flexibility tempered by caution is the key to success here.

Now THAT'S funny, and it is funny because it is true! Well posted.

I think everyone could use a little support now and then, but there is a big difference between someone getting a couple session on grief counseling, and daily appointments dealing with depression.

Here is a link to DSM you spoke of http://http://www.psychiatry.org/practice/dsm Frankly, the people I have met socially who are psychiatric types strike me as being into the field to solve their own problems.

Again, I think everyone needs a little support now and then, but I would never give my head to these people to solve my problems. Most of them do not seem plugged into the reality of the working person let along themselves.
