No, Obama didn't "avoid" military service any more than anyone else has since we became an all volunteer service.
Did he volunteer? No
So basically he had the opportunity to join but he avoided that opportunity.
So did approximately 29 percent of the population. Out of all the age eligible people who can join the military, only 30 percent of them are qualified. The rest are not qualified because of lack of education, too many convictions, positive drug test, not physically qualified for whatever reason, etc.
Out of those 30 percent of the population that are eligible to join? Only 1 percent of the country actually does serve.
When I was in foster care, I had a full ride for college waiting for me if I kept a B average. Well, things in the family happened, and I decided to run away and go back to live with my Grandparents for the last year of HS. Well, because I wasn't in the foster program anymore, my college chances evaporated because my Grandparents didn't have enough money to send me. So, about halfway through my Senior year, I enlisted in the DEP program, and was in boot camp 3 days after my 18th birthday. For me, the military ended up being a 20 year career and I retired. Probably one of the best things I ever did.
But, I also saw many people over the years that weren't compatible for military service. Obama got accepted to college and decided to go that route, so why fault him for not enlisting and becoming a lawyer?
And, since you're throwing stones at Obama for lack of military service, quick question......................how many years did YOU serve in the military?
