Back then there were shows like "The Sopranos", "The Wire", and "Breaking Bad".

There was also loads of reality TV.

But today's biggest TV are big budget spectacles.

Are today's TV shows more spectacle than substance?

I would say creators of most modern American television shows believe their programs can't be edgy enough. TV shows from the 80's carried comparable, and in some cases, superior grittiness in comparison to modern ones. Eighties shows carried impact without the need to show excessive nudity, pornography, gory violence, incest, child abuse and the like, which I would describe in modern shows that graphically illustrate such immoral frontiers as edgy. So yes, overall, modern television shows are all spectacle and very little memorable substance. Modern television wants to be raw, uncooked, taboo shattering—none of which equates to entertaining 90% of the time.

The only still in production shows that I have been watching these days is Blue Bloods and Young Sheldon.

God bless you always!!!
