Joshua Chamberlain is most famous for his heroic defense of
Little Round Top at the
Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War, where his 20th Maine regiment famously repelled Confederate assaults with a desperate bayonet charge, securing the Union's left flank and potentially turning the tide of the battle. He was also known as a scholar and professor, a four-term Governor of Maine, and the President of Bowdoin College, later dying from wounds sustained in the war, becoming the last Civil War soldier to die from them.
