Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) will not seek reelection in 2026, two people familiar with her decision confirmed to POLITICO, opening up a Senate seat in a red-leaning state Democrats hope to target.

The Iowa Republican’s plans shake up the battle for the midterms. The two people were granted anonymity to discuss the senator’s decision before it was made public.

Senate Republicans were already bracing for her potential retirement, raising concerns that the GOP will have another seat to defend next fall.

A handful of Iowa Democrats are already vying for the seat, including state Sen. Zach Wahls and state Rep. Josh Turek. Rep. Ashley Hinson, an Iowa Republican and former TV news anchor, has also privately expressed interest in running if Ernst retires and is now expected to join the race, according to two Republicans granted anonymity to disclose private discussions.

Senator Ernst's support for Trump's Big Ugly Bill has seriously hurt Iowa farmers in the pocket book. Meat Packing Plants in her home state are hurting from Trump's mass deportations. Ernst is readying her tea leaves right now. The leaves are NOT with her.

Before you speak for Iowa farmers, you should probable talk to one. Most of them support Ermst and would be happy for her to run again.

That is not what the Borg Collective does. They already know the "truth" and don't need to talk to anyone about it. Talking to people would destroy their narrative.

Everyone dies.

About damn time. That said, the prospects of a decent replacement coming from Iowa are slim.

How tragic, the rich farmers from Iowa cant sell corn to turn it into ethanol, sad.

Meat packing? They are fine, the price of meat is dropping. We can live without illegal aliens.

Is she the one who claimed she is ok with " everyone dies"?

Considering how much flak she received for her idiotic remark at that town hall meeting im not surprised she throwing in the towel.

And it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.
