India-France Carry Out Military Drill in The Alps

New Delhi, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) India and France began today a military exercise at a great scale in the Alps stretch close to Grenoble city, reported military sources in this capital.

It is the second of this type and called Shakti (In Sanskrit, empowerment), the maneuvers will be extended until Sep 20 and are part of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The objective of the exercise is to conduct joint counter insurgency platoon operations in the mountains, under the precept of the UN Letter and shared concern on the increasing threat of global terrorism, said the Indian officer.

The other objective is to exchange knowledge in order to improve their own military procedures and to increase the inter-operating possibilities and capacities of response to a common threat, he added.

The maneuvers involved 60 members of a troop of the Fifth Batallion of the Kumaon Regiment, from the South Western Command of the Indian Army and some others from the 27 Mountain Infantry Brigade of the French Army.

The vast experience and knowledge adquired by the Indian troops in areas such as the Siachen glacier( more than 6, 000 meters above the sea level, was in the 80th the World's highest battle field) and in counter insurgency operations has a special value for the French army, noted the sources.
