It's been 50 years ago and each one was an extremely festive event.

I remember that the festival went by many names depending on its location but anyone who spent time in Germany knew what and when it was.

When I lived, worked and studied in Freiburg i. Br., my friends and I would ride bicycles into Switzerland, France and throughout the Black Forest enjoying great wine, food along the way.

Yes, I celebrated it when I lived in Munich and, later, in the Black Forest where it is usually called Fasching.

It roughly corresponds to Mardi Gras and, I believe, was first celebrated in the 1200s .
