They did the heavy dying for sure, but that is mainly due to having poorly trained, undersupplied troops. Stalin fought WWII by simply throwing bodies at the Nazi army.
The Nazis should have been annihilated by the Russians. Their poor strategies, suicidal attacks in the middle of a Russian winter and bungling leadership weakened the German Army to a point Sweden probably could have beat them.
And yet, Russia still lost 12 million soldiers in battle against them, 8 million died due to illness and disease on top of that.
Let's see... Russia lost 20,000,000 while Germany only lost 500,000. And Germany was poorly organized, terribly planned attacks and trying to fight multiple fronts.
