The border to Mexico is about 3145 km and the border to Canada is 8891 kilometers - together this are 12,000 km. The size of the USA is about 10 million square kilometers. 833 squarekilometer/kilometer.

So to protect our borders would be 9 times more difficult. But we could do so whenever we will like to do so. The US military hasn't won a single war that involved asymmetric warfare - not in Vietnam down to Afghanistan and Mali.
Therefore no nation that cares about it's own people would ever ask or allow the US military to come in and thus inflict 10'th of thousands of civilian casualties. aka a Gaza like situation in their own country.

The US military and it's mighty navy has been endlessly screwing around in the Philippines since 1945, and until today neither the Philippine military nor the US military is able to control the South-Philippine sea nor it's island and it's population in it's southern territories.

Therefore only US law enforcement units and e.g. the FBI, etc. might be able to support their Mexican counterparts in their fight against the Cartels. And once more then 100 US enforcement personal would be killed - the US will draw out it's units.

As such the US can only send tons of $$ to Mexico - taking the existing corruption into account, and let the Mexican security forces handle their own internal issue.
