I saw this last night and it is very disturbing. It looks to me that the money we are spending trying to bail out our economies will be dwarfed by the amount we will need to find to bail out developing countries.
I wonder if any planning is going into this ?

The stronger European and Japanese Central Banks will follow “New Monetary Theory” policies also. The Fed’s “We will do anything it takes” money creation machine will probably not extend in any meaningful way to Third World countries. The IMF can’t step in independently (they have no separate “money machine”), so Third World governments will simply default on any existing dollar debts they have. They themselves can’t print money for international payment and the disruption in world markets will bankrupt most of whatever export industries they have. They don’t even have the cash for crucial medical services. Some, where political mass movements exist, will adopt “socialist” solutions to mass misery. Elsewhere there will most likely arise military or openly reactionary, even fascistic, dictatorships.

Iran’s central government, still suffering under sanctions, is today adopting basically a hands off “no policy” approach, and may prove a test case for whether “herd immunity” without vaccines can “work” by just letting the pandemic run its course. Many African countries, once hit, will probably end up doing the same. Only the rich in many of these societies have much chance to “self distance” behind walls. Covid-19 is no “Black Plague,” and in some really poor countries with so much ordinary disease it will hardly be felt — except economically.

No real help can be expected from the U.S. Tiny Cuba will probably send more doctors abroad to poor countries than we will, and China will surely send more aid.

I limited it to the past decades, hoping our behavior during these times is a better predictor of the future than, say, pre-WW II, colonial times.

Sure, the world developing a conscience would be nice to see - I just can't convince myself that dwindling oil flows in combination with growing refugee streams is a propitious occasion for it. The recent past tells a wildly different story.

During the Coronavirus crisis, Israel confiscates tents designated for clinic in the Northern West Bank

This morning, Thursday, 26 March 2020, at around 7:30 am, officials from Israel’s Civil Administration in the West Bank arrived with a military jeep escort, a bulldozer and two flatbed trucks with cranes at the Palestinian community of Khirbet Ibziq in the northern Jordan Valley. They confiscated poles and sheeting that were meant to form eight tents, two for a field clinic, and four for emergency housing for residents evacuated from their homes, and two as makeshift mosques. The force also confiscated a tin shack in place for more than two years, as well as a power generator and sacks of sand and cement. Four pallets of cinder blocks intended for the tent floors were taken away and four others demolished.​

So, they stole building materials for, and destroyed the existing structure of, what was supposed to be a Covid-19 clinic in the Palestinian West Bank. And here's what was left when the occupation forces were done:

My grasp of monetary policy, new or otherwise, is fairly limited, so I can't comment on that.

However:

My reading suggests that Iran's counter to Covid-19 was lacking and lagging, but they are ramping it up rather taking a "hands off" approach, unless something groundbreaking changed very recently. Have a link for that? Given the number of infected are said to be enormous, many times the official numbers, and many are ignoring government advice to self-isolate and avoid travel, devoting 20% of the nation's budget to fighting the plague may well be too little, too late, but it doesn't suggest they adopted a hands-off approach.

It should also be noted that the EU devoted all of €20 million in humanitarian assistance to sanctions-wrecked Iran. A drop in a very large bucket.

Looking at some numbers:

Fatalities / Infected = crude death rate

Iran: 2517 ÷ 35408 = 7.1%
UK: 1019 ÷ 14543 = 7.0%
