Well now, this is serious stuff. A lot of armed soldiers at Fort Knox who need to be vetted.

Why are Senators not allowed to get into Fort Knox? So yeah, there could be some danger in announcing this.

President Trump said Thursday that he personally plans to travel to the Fort Knox military base in Kentucky to find out whether all of the nation’s gold reserves are still there.

“I want to find out,” Mr. Trump said. “So we’re going to open up the doors. I’m going to see if we have gold there. We want to find, did anyone steal the gold at Fort Knox?”

“We want to make sure that we actually have, you know, 400 tons of gold for whatever the hell it is. It’s a lot of gold. I don’t want to open it, and the cupboards are bare. Could happen,” he added.

Mr. Trump’s remarks came during a speech before the Governors Association in Washington.

The Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire Elon Musk, in recent days has set its sight on Fort Knox, saying the U.S. should conduct an annual audit to determine the amount of gold there.

More than 147.4 million ounces of gold is stored at the Fort Knox depository, more than any other base in the country, according to data from the U.S. Mint.

All told, the U.S. owns 8,133.46 metric tons of gold, or almost 287 million ounces, according to the World Gold Council, more than any other nation in the world.

The last reported audit at the Fort Knox reserve took place in September 1974 when several members of Congress assured Americans that the gold supply was intact, according to the Mint. President Ford also allowed a group of journalists to attend to verify the audit.

Yeah this is a dicey one! We don't need a replay of Al Capone's Vaults on a national scale.

There are no soldiers guarding the gold at Fort Knox. In fact, there are no combat troops assigned at that post. The gold is guarded by the Treasury Department US Mint Police. I worked at that post for 5 years.

The base is headquarters for the Army's Human Resources Command, Army Recruiting, and Army cadet command supervising officer training and JROTC.

That is fine, thing is, the few who have gone were only given access to a limited part of the place, not able to see it all much less inventory it, and at that, you have to dig down in there, take bars down deep, then weigh and core them, do an assay of their content chemically or by xray otherwise, they could just be gold plated bars of lead or tungsten.

It's a big job, and while Trump can go, he will need experts there able to estimate whether things really do add up.

I'm still waiting to hear what all those drones in New Jersey were all about.

I am going to go with the belief that there is gold there. Do you think the president will get to actually see the gold ?

They will remove it and them claim it was gone when they got there.

If it is fake, then FDR has some explaining to do since almost all the gold was placed there in his term of office. Kentucky Senator Dee Huddleston toured the vault in 1974. News crews filmed the vault inside. I was born and raised in Louisville just north of there and remember the day it happened. I was 13 at the time.

I did some reading and discovered the vault is only about 60' x 40' but 2 stories high. If you're allowed to say, how do they stack the gold?
