"Hyundai, Kia Plan to Boost American Auto Production to Avoid Trump Tariffs
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia aim to boost American automobile production to avoid President Donald Trump’s planned 25 percent auto tariff, according to a report.

Trump on Tuesday said the tariff rates on auto imports will be “in the neighborhood of 25 percent,” with more details to come in early April.

He noted that he will give auto manufacturers time to avoid the tariff.

“If they have a plant and factory here, there will be no tariff,” the 47th president remarked.

Both automakers aim to boost domestic production of vehicles by 70 percent with the use of their massive plant in Georgia, which will open in March."

It's called winning. Get use to it. MAGA is just getting started.

Nissan is planning to move some of their Mexican production to the US as well.

Most Canadians/Europeans assume Trump is just bluffing as he continues to delay and give far away dates.

It seems Japanese companies believe him. If it is true that he is going to apply tariffs as promised, the sooner a car company expands in the U.S the better for them to take advantage of weakened competition.

We will see if Trump keeps his promise of an April 2nd car tariff. I think early March is supposed to be the date for aluminum and steel tariffs.

I'm not convinced to be honest. His trade rep, definitely sounds committed, but Trump backed down in his first term as well. We will see how it all unfolds I guess. He would absolutely take the car industry out of Ontario and Doug Ford would look like a fool for threatening early on to stop sending energy to Michigan. Not even other Premiers like his response to a tariff.

Ford is a fake Trumpster really, just talking out of his behind to appease some of his supporters, the guy has bankrupted Ontario and relied on handouts from the Feds while spending billions on boondoggles for his lowly friends.

When all the shit they build them cars from comes from overseas, it isn't going to save them that much in the end.

I thought most of the foreign automakers already have at least one plant here. Betcha most are not in a union state either. Makes me wonder if the steel/aluminum tariffs won't last long, why build a plant here if you gotta pay higher prices for steel/aluminum?

My Toyota Tundra was built in Texas and the engine built in their Indiana plant. 100% American built.

That was Toyota building 34 American plants for vehicle tariffs that have been in place for years.

The "Chicken Tax" is a 25% tariff on light trucks imported to the United States. The tariff was imposed in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson in retaliation for European tariffs on American chicken.

How it started
  • The tariff was part of a trade war between the United States and Europe over chicken imports in the 1960s. This period was known as the "Chicken War".

    • The war began when European governments accused the U.S. of trying to force their local chicken producers out of business.
    • The U.S. retaliated with tariffs on light trucks, potato starch, dextrin, and brandy.
How it impacted the auto industry
    • The tariff protected the U.S. auto industry.
    • Automakers worked around the tariff by rebadging their vehicles, or building assembly plants in North America.
    • The tariff influenced the U.S. auto industry and contributed to the development of the Subaru Brat.

Long before Trump.

Great!! so a Korean automaker is going to set up/extend a "modern" plant in the USA - thus competing with an American brand manufacturer (who's production lines are out of date) - who will then have to reduce his labor force and eventually will go out of business - and the ex US manufacturers workers might get partially employed by the Korean manufacturer. :auiqs.jpg::auiqs.jpg:

Furthermore the Korean US Plant can't sell it's cars outside the USA - since they already have plants outside the USA and will face tariffs by those countries they might want to export to from the USA - great plan by the Grand Wizard :smoke:

The question now is how long until people start complaining that many of these jobs will become unionized, as needs to happen. Then they'll say 'unions drive up costs" and other plain nonsense.

That would depend on which country, wages in Mexico are substantially lower.

Lower wages, but outdated manufacturing facilities that require more workers. A friend of mine traveled to Mexico and a few countries in South America to sell high temperature ceramic materials to steel mills. He said four guys with shovels loaded trucks with raw materials and they would ride on the pile of what they shoveled to its destination and those 4 guys used their shovels to unload the truck. Wages are just one of many factors that determine costs. No, I don`t watch videos that could be made by anyone for any reason.

I wouldn't compare anything about this term to his first term. He learned some valuable lessons about who he has surrounding him since then as well as a more friendly congress.
