If I remember my Geology most of the mud flows tends to move West.
I will have to consult my old Cascadia Geology Book I had for my Geology class in 1984 at Ellensburg.
Yes most of the rivers from melting glaciers run westward, but they are also fed by smaller rivers, creeks and waterways........all of those would have mudflow as well as any debris picked up along the way.....namely rocks & trees, and whatever homes, vehicles, in their paths.
Since the recent swarms, there's been alot of info posted on social media of areas that could be in danger of mudflows, but I don't think alot of them include rivers to the south end either. Like the Chehalis and Cowlitz, possibly others as well, that flood normally every year......there's no reason they wouldn't have some of the 'overflow' of mud & debris.
But the lahars are only part of the problem. IF/WHEN Rainier does decide to erupt, and give plenty of sign of doing so, any roads will be closed within a perimeter of the mountain. That could include both Chinook & Cayuse.....as well as White pass, Maybe even Snoqualmie, maybe not. All of it would actually depend on the eruption itself and it's aftermath.
