But the Nation was deeply divided well before Trump – more than a decade of disinformation and lies propagated by rightwing media and a Republican party that for decades advanced an agenda seeking to undermine our democratic institutions and hobble the political process set the stage for the likes of Trump.

It was far too late to denounce Trump’s lies about President Obama’s citizenship – Trump is the product of the political rot facilitated by the GOP, and the consequence of the fear, ignorance, and stupidity of the voters.

The people are solely responsible for the bad government they get – and Trump is the worst.

Power that could be used as a means to challenge beliefs and inform the public has instead been misused in order to misinform it. All for commercial gain. If the millions of collective hours watching that drivel were used as a public service to educate people on complex policy issues, presenting positions from all sides, we'd be far better off.

Not only because trump would have remained as he was, an opinionated crank looking for a wider audience of marks for his cons. But also because we wouldn't waste so much time on fruitless debates about facts already in evidence instead of discussing a path forward to address the problems at hand.
