The reason so few crime guns were purchased by the user is simple enough. A stolen “street gun” typically costs a career criminal less than one fourth a dealers cost, and there is no identifying paperwork to fill out from the “street corner dealer.”

So a criminal can discard a “street gun” without major financial loss or other regrets, and if the gun is found and traced to a crime, there is no paperwork on file that would lead to the criminal. Therefore the stolen “street gun” is the criminal’s preferred weapon.
