One hundred and thirty million girls globally are forced to miss out on school, including 68 million girls who are denied the chance at a secondary education. Girls that are out of school are three times more likely to become victims of child marriage, and are more often exposed to violence, abuse, and trafficking. Finally, a lack of education cuts off a girl’s chances of economic independence, often trapping her in extreme poverty. We have it so bad in America.

Yes, we have a lot to be thankful for. Attitudes change more slowly than laws, though. We're not through yet.

And we earned what we've got. Two hundred years ago, it was unheard of for a woman in this country to go to college. Even a hundred years ago it was a bit of a sensation. Good lord, when my cousin went into Engineering in the 1960's, she was the only female student in the whole department. Female doctors were almost unheard of then, either.

We fought for what we've accomplished and it isn't just "luck."
