Long standing advice is to chew your food "25 times". Twenty-five chews is a good start but is hardly enough. Serious 'salivation' doesn't occur until well after that. Chewing from 25 onward produces a "bolus" that is quite liquified and thoroughly mixed with saliva. It's only then that proper digestion begins. Of course, this usually requires that eating change from a social activity to a very personal one.

You could cut it into smaller pieces, but I try to chew my soup for at least 10 minutes a spoonful.

You know you have taken too big of a bite if you have to swallow some before continuing to chew.

I pretty much have to eat stuff like that with a knife and fork so I cut it small to begin with. I chipped both my front top teeth playing rugby so I have veneers on them. If I bit into anything dense/tough, they have a tendency to come loose. I broke one of them as soon as I went home before the numb had even worn off tearing open a package. Had to go back and get it done again the next day.

maybe try using chopsticks for now on and you wont be going through so many spoons.

Chew each bite 25 times? Wow I don't think I've ever done that in my life. Well maybe when I used to get Waffle House steaks back in the day.

I’m not sure USMB should tolerate threads so obviously discussing mastication.

Where is the decency?

If I was to find myself extremely wealthy, I would hire someone to do my chewing for me.

I have always said eating is not social activity,,

most times its a hassle so all efforts need to be made for the most efficient way to gain nourishment nd digestion starts in the mouth with saliva,,

weird ttopic but still informative

It's just the latest that I've posted on the topic. Proper eating/chewing is the foundation of health, sadly overlooked. Tragic is that so many have oral/dental problems that prevent proper chewing. And it's a global health problem.

I do not chew my food well but yet I am always the last person to finish my meal. I can't listen to others and eat at the same time.
I'm always the last to finish as well, regardless of who I have dinner with. I once took a lady out to dinner and hardly begun eating and she was finished. I think she swallowed her steak whole (scary). :omg:
