After Barack Obama’s eight long years of gutting America’s missile-defense capabilities, our nation has awakened to the nightmare of a North Korea armed with nuclear missiles capable of reaching U.S. territory.

Fortunately, Donald Trump, who, unlike his predecessor, takes his responsibility to defend the nation seriously, now resides in the White House, and Obama, one in a series of Democrat presidents who cleared the way for the nuclear adventurism of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is on the outside looking in.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," President Trump told reporters yesterday after applauding the unanimous weekend approval of the toughest U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution against North Korea to date. "They will be met with fire, fury, and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before."

Defense Secretary James “Mad Dog” Mattis issued a statement urging North Korea to back off or suffer the consequences. “The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people," he said. "While our State Department is making every effort to resolve this global threat through diplomatic means, it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed, and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth."

But that frivolous view was rejected by the electorate last November and finally we have a president who, unlike the previous occupant of the White House, wants to protect America from foreign attack.

What is sad and really exposes the underlying problem and chasm in America today, is can you imagine Reagan being attacked for his wall speech? Can you imagine those on the left blaming American politicians and leaders for the fascist, oppressive Eastern Bloc system in the 1980s?

As Trump said, maybe he didn't even speak tough enough. At some point this talk will probably have to become action, not because anyone wants to, but because they have to.

It's really simple, a nation like North Korea run in the manner they are run simply cannot have a nuclear arsenal and the ability to hold the world hostage with this arsenal. I knew this when Obama was in power and I certainly know this today. I never believed that war with North Korea was the answer, as long as what we all believed was true, that this guy isn't pursuing nukes. If the contrary is true, that alters the calculus considerably. He is certainly a different breed than his father.

NATO might be called upon to show it's value soon. China had better understand what is at stake also, just their place in the world and their economic viability.

Conclusion

The United States is in full compliance with all of its NPT obligations, including Article VI. The Cold War era nuclear arms race is over; significant numbers of U.S. nuclear forces are being reduced, and large numbers of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems have been, and continue to be, eliminated.

A gradual, step-by-step process toward nuclear disarmament is the proper and most effective course to pursue. The United States is on that course, and is making real strides toward that end.

However, the NPT is under growing stress from violations of the Treaty by states parties that are seeking to develop nuclear weapons in violation of their solemn nonproliferation commitments, as well as the growing concern that terrorists will acquire WMD. These developments make it all the more vital that all NPT parties insist on full compliance with the nonproliferation obligations of the Treaty.

Former President Barack Obama’s National Security Adviser Susan Rice has some dangerous advice for President Trump on how to deal with the North Korean nuclear threat, which she delivered in the form of a New York Times op-ed on August 10th under the title, “It’s Not Too Late on North Korea.” Now a private citizen, but still possessing a top-secret security clearance for no apparent reason, Ms. Rice recommended what amounts to a policy of appeasement toward the rogue regime, declaring that a nuclear-armed North Korea would not be so terrible. “History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea,” Ms. Rice wrote. In actually, history shows the opposite. When dealing with a megalomaniacal dictator armed to the teeth, a policy built around “peace in our time” does not work.

General David L. Mann, Commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense, United States Strategic Command, told the House Armed Services Committee in 2014that we had only “a limited defense against threats emanating from North Korea and Iran.” When asked to explain, he said “we all know that these countries are continuing to increase their arsenal and their technology. And down the road, they might reach a point in terms of numbers, just the numbers of missiles that they could employ that it could overwhelm the system.”

North Korea is now much closer to that point, thanks in large part to the passivity of Barack Obama and his national security team. President Trump certainly does not need the advice of Susan Rice or anyone else who embraced Obama’s failed strategic patience paralysis. Indeed, Susan Rice is dead wrong in her advice. We should not tolerate a North Korea well armed with nuclear weapons and equipped with the means for their delivery to the U.S. homeland. Aside from its own potential use of such nuclear weapons, there would be little to stop North Korea from handing off some of its weapons and technology to Iran and to non-state terrorists who mean to do us great harm.
