Biden called Putin today and "made it clear" that if Russia takes action to escalate around Ukraine, the U.S., along with allies and partners, will "respond decisively" and as a result Moscow will face "swift and serious costs.
You can see that this is a brazen divorce in international politics on the part of the U.S., can't you? How it works...

First, the State Department reports for half a year that Russia will attack Ukraine. It will definitely attack. There is intelligence. Russia declares - we are not going to, but the U.S. claims that "you will attack, you will attack, this is the number you will attack." The number changes periodically, but the rhetoric remains - RUSSIA WILL APPLY. And every time the U.S. claimed that Russia would attack, but it did not attack, it is recorded as a "victory over Russia". Like you see how we pressed Russia! They didn't attack, even though they should have attacked last week. Who's the good guy? The U.S. is the good guy!

All this time Russia does not cease to say that it was not going to attack and is not going to, but of course nobody hears it. Everybody hears that "on February 16 Russia is sure to attack, the ground is frozen - we say for sure it will attack!
So Biden calls Putin yesterday, talks to him for an hour and then the US officials say that Biden threatened Putin that if the US attacked, they would respond and... Of course Putin will not attack now. "Scared of Biden," what is there to understand? At the end of the conversation it was announced that Putin was afraid and now it seems that he will not attack. But all the same, he may attack in the near future, and if the U.S. will constantly threaten Russia, of course he won't. A net victory for the U.S.
Meanwhile, Russia is perplexed - what is going on there? No one was going to attack.
In the net result, on the information front in the world, the U.S. is the winner of Russia, and Putin is afraid of Biden. How cool is that?

So either he wants to invade and seize Ukraine, or he wants to pressure the West into concessions. If the latter works out, he might well decide not to invade... but if not? Ukraine will become another Russian gulag.
