House Bill Would Cut Funding to Backers of Israeli Boycotts

A new bipartisan bill introduced Thursday in the House would strip all federal funds from any U.S. academic institution that decides to boycott Israel, according to a copy of the newly filed legislation obtained by the Free Beacon.

The introduction of the bill marks the first time that Congress has sought to level harsh economic penalties on federally funded universities that seek to boycott the Jewish state.

The bill comes just months after the American Studies Association (ASA) agreed to boycott Israeli academics and universities, prompting a fierce backlash from pro-Israel groups and others.

The “Protect Academic Freedom Act,” jointly filed by House Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D., Ill.) could serve as a deterrent to other groups considering Israeli boycotts.

It would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 “to prohibit an institution that participates in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars from being eligible” to receive federal funds, according to text of the legislation.

“Attempts to single out Israel for discriminatory boycotts violates the principle of academic freedom guaranteed by the United States,” the bill states.

Doesn't seem legal. Boycotts are 1st Amendment freedoms. We might not like it, but to have a 1st Amendment we have to suck it up along with hate speech of other kinds. Can counter-boycott and fight those who support such things without contradicting the Constitution.

and considering most insitutions of higher learning are forms of corporations, I thought they are not supposed to have 1st amendment rights....

You have no consitutional right to be funded by the government. This is not a criminal prosecution, nor an attempt by the government to prevent them from acting out any silly boycott they want to perform. They are not being stopped or prevented from doing anything. They simply have to accept the fact that if they want to boycott Israel, they cant accept federal funding.

No mention of boycotts in the 1st amendment as far as I can see. It says this :-

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

So this bill does not go against any of those subjects, in fact it upholds many of them

Europe is starting to enact laws or use existing ones to close down the BDS movement. France has declared the boycotts illegal and will arrest anyone that starts a protest, The UK is looking at using anti social behaviour laws against protester, or racism laws if they only target Israeli/Jewish shops. You should come over here and see just how quiet it is on the high street with fruit being clearly labelled "Produce of Israel" and flying of the shelves.
