Profits? No way in hell can they figure it out. They have no clue what the companies overhead is. Making contractors squeal? Sounds like a lot of corruption in your area. Any business that knows what they are doing will not be known as parlor boy.

And yet they still keep working for the same people.

If so they pad the bid knowing it will be knocked down. And probably have lunch together.

Bid padding is mostly a part of municipal work, and when a GC/sub bids on a job with a known tightwad.

Problem is it takes only 1 guy to not pad, and then everyone else starts cutting back.

If they underbid the job they lose out and nature will take its' course.

Only if they do it consistently, and only if they can't make it up with Change Orders.

A change order is just a contract extension, both sides need to agree.

Trump may be a bit more of an ass when it comes to paying subcontractors and vendors, but that has been the game in construction and real estate work before Trump, and will continue after him.

He's just more on the asshole side of the spectrum, but there are plenty of GC's and Owners that do the exact same thing.
