Ok, this took place in Britain, but one of the biggest mistakes America has made, and continues to make, is not making English the official language. In addition, ALL immigrants should be REQUIRED to learn English, become fluent in it, and USE IT!!
We should all along have had a program such as they have in Israel, where ALL immigrants are given an intense six month immersion into Hebrew.
A common language would have given everyone in this country a tether to each other, where despite our differences in politics, gender, race, etc, we would always have this as a way of connection.
It's sad that we didn't do this fifty years ago, since it's likely too late now even if we tried.
