My grandfather made this foot-powered jigsaw during World War II. The Depression had taught him to be very frugal, so he built the saw from orange and grapefruit crates, which were made from hardwood.

my stepdad did a bunch of restoration for the mormons in salt lake back in the 70s and saw where they ordered everything from back east to be shipped in hardwood crates so they could make furniture out of it. he saw several tables and desks that had nail holes in them from the crates.

Neat stuff.

My grandpa would leave his car at home and walk an hour one way to save a dime, and he remained that way into his 70s. With frugality comes creativity, or just some exercise.
