Having witnessed the Russians hacking into Democratic party computers and influencing the outcome of the presidential election there, it is time for President Obama to respond with more than words. He did promise to do so "at a time and place of our own choosing" but he has only weeks before a Russian-friendly Donald Trump takes over. So, the "time" he speaks of is now. That the Russians could mess with the election through their cyber skills is bad enough when President Obama should have been protecting the integrity of American elections but it makes the Americans look weak to the rest of the world who will see minority president-elect Donald Trump as Moscow's man in Washington. Hitting back right now is a must. But what to do?
Cyber war is something the Russians do well. By leaking information selectively to a media willing to run with the stolen data and fake news, hate radio and FOX News in America, they can cause an electorate to question the integrity of our democratic system. The Russians have been using disinformation for years and they have provided the script to enemies of the United States. As they annexed Crimea, they claimed this was what the people there wanted. They got away with that. They moved into eastern Ukraine and even shot-down a civilian plane carrying many Dutch families and simply denied it was them. They sent their navy through the English Channel on its way to prop-up the murderous dictator Assad and they are winning the propaganda war there with plenty of stooges willing to repeat their claim that they are killing only terrorists.
Why did Obama let all this happen and then stand-by and let the Russians steal an American presidential election? The Russians have contempt for the United States and the European Union. Putin is winning the Cyber Cold War. There must be some people with cyber capabilities in the United States. Trump is ready to get rid of sanctions on Russia. But, let's get personal. What Putin would not like and what Obama can do is to declassify and publish documents about Vladimir Putin's personal fortune. Like Trump, he has a lot of money and real estate. The details of this is a secret to the Russian people and its revelation leading up to Putin's reelection in 2018 might lower his popularity at home.
