hitting a 100+mph pitch

When I grew up, most Major League Pitchers were mid 90s top.
Today every team has multiple Pitchers who consistently break 100

Not impossible if the pitch doesn't have a little movement on it.

Yah still have to have an idea of where it's going in the strike zone.
There was some dude out there claiming he could hit a 100 mph fastball at half the distance of the plate and mound.
Of course he was hitting a ball from a pitching machine that hit the same spot over and over. Then it just becomes a matter of timing.

Exactly.

The pitches have to have a little motion on them going through the strike zone for any pitch to be effective....You can throw that 100 mph all day, and if you don't have a little side-to-side or downward motion on the pitch, you're still going to get tagged hard.

Exceptionally difficult for us. To the professional baseball player it is still very difficult but the ball slows down for them through seeing 10s of thousands of pitches in their lifetime. They could set up a pitching machine to throw them all day.

Now trying to move out of the way of one while simultaneously crouching in and looking for a base hit...scary proposition if the pitcher loses control. At least todays batters aren't brushed back often.

You have to start your swing before the ball is released, then bail out if the pitch doesn't look right.

I only clocked 1 sec. from pitchers mound to catcher.

A 100 mph pitch makes it to home plate in less than 1 sec

100 mph = 147 ft per sec

60.5 ft from the mound to the plate

It works out to about .4 seconds

In high school I hit an 80mph pitch from our team pitcher but as the coach said'' it went up slow like a helium balloon and dropped straight down in midfield not enough power or speed not good enough.'' 🙂 ;)

People think those really fast pitches rise as the get to the plate but they don't

The ball is moving so fast that your eyes can't track it and your brain basically just guess where the ball will be so it looks like the pitch might rise by the time your brain figures out where the ball actually is

That’s probably because they were measuring the speed further away from the pitcher.

Nolan Ryan threw 105-107mph using today’s measuring methods

Go figure Ryan who holds records that will most likely never be broken was never awarded the Cy Young.

As college pitchers got faster the bats got lighter and wider. Feature if they were used in the bigs.
The bats everyone uses from HS thru college are -3 BBCOR which hit similar to a wood bat. The sweet spot is a bit larger and they have a minor increased trampoline effect, but the weight/length ratios and barrel sizes are not different. The biggest difference is the durability, performance consistency and safety of the non-wood bats.

I'd rather hear the sound of a wood bat hitting a ball than the "ping" of a shitty aluminum bat

I thought I was a pretty good hitter in HS.
Went to a minor league tryout and got to bat against a low A pitcher.
First pitch curveball left me on my butt.
2nd fastball I never saw.
Enlightened I dropped the bat, nodded to the pitcher and left.
