Helicopter crash in Huntington Beach

Five people were hospitalized after a helicopter crashed along Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Details are still emerging, but initial dispatch information from the California Highway Patrol indicates the crash was reported around 2:09 p.m. near the Cars ‘N Copters on the Coast event site, in front of the Waterfront Beach Resort.

Footage obtained by KTLA shows the helicopter descending toward the street as spectators look on, when it suddenly drops and crashes near the roadway.

Wow. This is a wild video. I wonder if it was due to wind. It’s super windy here in Vegas today.

Watching the video, as the helicopter is coming in, the tail rotor is barely turning. I believe its function is to prevent the spinning of the fuselage. It appears it may have been a mechanical malfunction.

Kind of strange that people just got injured instead of straight up died. When something in the sky like a helicopter fell, people in it should be dead.

Could you imagine whoever was on that tilt-a-whirl ride, the feeling of spinning around knowing you are about to crash? And then quite possibly being able to walk away from it? Those trees saved their lives. No post crash fire.

Wind: I did not see any signs of wind at all in the many palm trees.

It looked more like he was having a problem with the rear rotor, went up higher trying to buy himself time and space, then finally lost it all.

That one tree that got chopped in half probably saved lives by absorbing the brunt of most of the props rotational energy, stopping it spinning quickly yet not breaking it sending parts flying.

The Bird Strike on the Rear Rotor looks pretty convincing

Yeah, there seems to be a bird involved in there at some point but the chopper seemed to be having problems long before the bird was flung off.

So far I have seen 16 different Videos of the Copter, some up to 4 mins prior to the Crash and some from as far away as 2 Km from the Crash site , I’m sure more & better videos will surface .
