Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth backed up his decision to return a Confederate monument to Arlington National Cemetery removed by “the woke lemmings” who have erased Confederate symbols from American culture.

The Reconciliation Monument, a memorial to the Confederacy, was removed from Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia in 2023.

Hegseth explained his decision to bring back the monument to Arlington during a Fox News appearance Thursday afternoon.

“Because we recognize our history, we don’t erase it. We don’t follow the woke lemmings off the cliff that want to tear down statues,” the secretary said.

When we honor so-called Confederate monuments or fly the battle flag, we're not celebrating slavery, the Confederacy, or racism. What we're doing is remembering the courage of our ancestors—which was extreme.

Twenty-five percent of all Southern men died in the War Between the States. That’s a statistic that could break most people. Losses like that would crush most societies. But it didn’t break us.

Fast forward to the Iraq War: about half of all casualties were Southern white men with Anglo names. Don’t believe me? Check out the photos, the names, and the cities. The next largest losses came from Midwesterners and Latinos. The East Coast and West Coast were underrepresented.

Although Black Americans made up about 30% of the military at the time, their losses were small.

If we ever face a land war with the Russians or the Chinese, you’d better hope that Southern military heritage—our pride in our ancestors—is still alive. Unless, of course, you plan on doing the fighting yourself.
