Hegseth defends returning Confederate monument to Arlington National Cemetery

Why the Confederacy was formed
They saw the rest of the world abandoning slavery
They saw new states opposing slavery
They saw a rising abolitionist tide.

When Lincoln was elected, they rushed to create a country that was 40 percent enslaved

They panicked when Lincoln was elected and thought in 20 years they would not be able to stop uncompensated emancipation.

Abolitionism wasn't strong in the North until AFTER the civil war started. Before that it was a loud minority. The only thing the North agreed on 100% was stopping slavery from expanding into the territories.

That's ancient history.

You are refusing to face the reality that the generation that fought and defeated the confederacy, forgave and welcome back into the union, their former enemies.

You are just being an asshole.
The reality is that the Confederacy was evil
Those who defend the Confederacy are evil

The Confederacy was 40 percent slave
Why weren’t monuments erected to honor that 40 percent instead of those who fought to enslave them?

More Lost Cause propaganda
The war was about SLAVERY

There were no abolitionists in the Confederate Army
Those poor men rushed home after the war to create a Jim Crow South

Nope. Dealing with the reality of the war, not the comic book version you are pushing.

YOu are just trying to tear this nation apart, based on old history.

YOu are vile.

Who's stopping anyone from creating those monuments?

I like comic books to. I can distiguish between comic books and history.

You need to try to do the same.

IN the real world, good men can respect men that fought bravely in defense of their homes, even if it was on the other side.

Our ancestors were good men like that. It is sad to see what you have become.

Your Lost Cause rhetoric rewriting the history of the war is no longer tolerated

Good question

From 1880 to the 1920s The Daughters of the Confederacy worked to erect monuments to the Confederacy in every town.
Given that 40 percent of the Confederacy were slaves, why didn’t their ancestors work to erect monuments celebrating their freedom from slavery?

Because any black who dared to suggest such a thing would be beaten up and have their house burned down

Well they can go out and erect them now.

Many communities are starting to erect monuments honoring slaves. Unfortunately, many of these monuments are being vandalized. The racism of the old south still lingers.

Here’s an image of the Unsung Founders Memorial at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—a memorial honoring the enslaved and free people of color who helped build the university.

What happened?

In spring 2019, the memorial was defaced with racist language, slurs, and even urine. Graffiti included messages such as “**** this monument!!!”, “Destroy this monument to racism!!!”, “Confederate lives matter!!!”, “Yankee go home, antifa sucks.”, along with a racial slur .

Two suspects—Nancy Rushton McCorkle and Ryan Francis Barnett—were arrested and charged with vandalism and ethnic intimidation. Surveillance footage linked one of them to a group called Heirs to the Confederacy

You progressives set that up when you approved of Anti-fa and BLM tearing down all those statues during 2020, and then the continuation via bullied local governments.

Hell, those idiots even vandalized the 54th Mass. memorial and a bust of some abolitionist.

You ***** normalized this, now deal with it.

Given that the Civil War was fought over slavery, it is odd that so few southern communities erected monuments honoring the freedom of those slaves.

But almost every town managed to put up a monument to those who fought to ensure slavery continued

Losing causes tend to do that. The only fact that matters is the did lose, and the winners allowed them to mourn that loss as they saw fit.

If only that was the extent of it

Rather than mourn the Confederate losses during the war, it became a celebration of the Confederacy with flags proudly waved.

And they were allowed to do so by the winners, because the whole point of the war was to restore the Union.

Not prosecute them all as traitors, not remove their political rights, but bring them back into the fold.

That were drafted by the slave owning elites. Remember "rich man's war. Poor Man's Fight."

Many of those elites were officers in the war, especially on the southern side because of their manpower limitations.

The "rich man's war, poor man's fight" thing really only came into being with the Vietnam war.

We don’t respect the attempt to rewrite history by a lot of deeply racist people.
After the Civil War, the Lost Cause Movement seized control of history by downplaying the role of slavery and claiming states rights and defending your homeland.

Confederate heroes like Lee, Jackson and Stuart were honored while Union heroes like Grant, Sherman and Sheridan were villainized

Wrong

Poor white farmers were just as proud of their state, to which they gave first allegiance - as the rich slave owners were

Confederate officers - aka rich elites - died in the percentage as their men, the poor white farmers

So proud the CSA had to initiate a draft of them (NOT the RICH) in April 1862. Rich slave owners were sPECIfically EXCLUDED: Twenty Negro Law - Wikipedia

No matter how you shave this the CSA was shitty.
