Why the Confederacy was formed
They saw the rest of the world abandoning slavery
They saw new states opposing slavery
They saw a rising abolitionist tide.
When Lincoln was elected, they rushed to create a country that was 40 percent enslaved
They panicked when Lincoln was elected and thought in 20 years they would not be able to stop uncompensated emancipation.
Abolitionism wasn't strong in the North until AFTER the civil war started. Before that it was a loud minority. The only thing the North agreed on 100% was stopping slavery from expanding into the territories.
