Required reading in English class when I was in school as was at least part of "Beowulf." Poems were really LONG in old English lit. I don't think it was taught much if at all in the USA after my generation though.

One of our favorite comedies set in Medieval Europe is "A Knight's Tale." Geoffrey Chaucer was one of the brilliantly conceived characters in that movie, the role pure fiction of course.

I also did some Old English.
Very much like Old German.
 
I have read some of the tales. We also had to memorize the beginning of Beowulf in old english and stand in front of the class and recite it as a requirement to pass. Oh the good old days....that are dead and buried for a reason.
