There was a guy in our High School whose nickname was Shemp. Only some of us understood the reference from this old TV show.

The guy had the same hair and look, at a time when most of us had short hair.

his real name was Samuel..... He was called "Shemp" because "Sam" came out that way in his mother's thick Litvak accent.

The Stooges were Lithuanian Jews. Harry Cohn, also a Jew, ran Columbia Pictures. He made sure he got most of the money the Stooges earned.
