Employees of The Guardian newspaper could face criminal charges over their role in publishing secrets leaked by Edward Snowden, Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer has signalled.

Cressida Dick, an assistant commissioner at Scotland Yard, confirmed for the first time that detectives were examining whether staff at the newspaper had committed an offence.

She also told MPs that her officers are looking at potential breaches of a specific anti-terrorism law which makes it unlawful to communicate information about British intelligence agents. The offence carries up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Is this how a free, democratic government is supposed to act, levying charges against journalists?

Snowden Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
January 29, 2014 ~ NSA leaker Edward Snowden has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The nomination was made Wednesday by two Norwegian politicians, Snorre Valen and Bård Vegar Solhjell, who say Snowden made the world more safe by revealing the scope of U.S. data monitoring. Solhjell is Norway’s former environment and education minister from the Socialist Left Party, and Valen is a fellow member of parliament.

“There is no doubt that the actions of Edward Snowden may have damaged the security interests of several nations in the short term,” the two wrote in a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “We are, however, convinced that the public debate and change in policy that have followed in the wake of Snowden’s whistleblowing has contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order.”

The two added that the “level of sophistication and depth of surveillance that citizens all over the world are subject to have stunned us, and stirred debate," adding that revelations of widespread surveillance "led to the reintroduction of trust and transparency as a leading principle in global security policies."

Last year, A Swedish professor named Stefan Svallfors nominated Snowden for the prize. Nominations for the prestigious award can be made by government officials, previous winners, university professors and members of international organizations. Last year, the Nobel committee received 259 nominations, a record number. The winner was the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The deadline for 2014 nominations is February 1, and this year’s winner will be announced October 10.

Dunno how things work in the UK, but here in the US we have the 1st Amendment. As a result no journalist has ever been convicted for revealing classified materials. I personally feel exemptions to it should be made for that but am never consulted. :)

A journalist should be able to protect a source and freedom of speech but leaking classified documents are a completely different story. What if a journalist published the exact location and time of D-Day? That OK? Whether or not those documents were classified was in no way in question. Find another way to be a patriot or face the consequences, clearly documented consequences by the way. He didn't publish that one did he? If it worth it then it is worth it. The world is all in favor of people dumping U.S. classified information on the Internet. No shit.
