Govt agencies told to prepare for mass firings in case of govt shutdown

Would mass firings of government employees be a first for a government "shutdown"? Is this more bark than bite?

~~~~~~>
It might be the best thing that happens. Just imagine when the shut down is over, Trump can regulate those that return to their jobs. Just imagine how much money can be saved.
At the same time The Feds are trying to bring back workers fired from DOGE, they are threatening permanent cuts if there is a Federal government shutdown (even though MAGA controls the House, Senate, SCOTUS, and Executive). Ok. . .
White House lays groundwork for mass government firings if there's a shutdown
The Office of Management and Budget says in a memo that agencies should prepare reduction-in-force plans to accompany furloughs if a spending bill isn't passed next week.
WASHINGTON — The White House is raising the stakes of a potential government shutdown by drafting a request for federal agencies to prepare “reduction in force” plans in case Congress doesn’t pass a spending bill before Oct. 1.
In a memo from the Office of Management and Budget, obtained by NBC News, the Trump administration indicated it's prepared to go beyond the traditional furloughing of some government employees during shutdowns and fire federal employees.
"With respect to those Federal programs whose funding would lapse and which are otherwise unfunded, such programs are no longer statutorily required to be carried out," the memo says. "RIF notices will be in addition to any furlough notices provided due to the lapse in appropriation."
The memo, first reported by Politico, points to job losses for certain federal employees if the government shuts down next week.
"Programs that did not benefit from an infusion of mandatory appropriations will bear the brunt of a shutdown, and we must continue our planning efforts in the event Democrats decide to shut down the government," the memo says.
The memo says agencies would be directed to consider reduction-in-force notices for all employees in programs, projects or activities whose discretionary funding will lapse on Oct. 1 that lack available alternative funding sources and are "not consistent with the President’s priorities."
Trump has told both Schumer and Jefferies to pound sand.
Their demands are ridiculous.
That's during Corona and work from home. The other poster is talking about something different. She is full of it.
You are absolutely clueless as to what govt workers have been doing. They were “working” from home long before COVID - talking hikes, running errands, meeting friends for 2-hour lunches, lazing by the pool, getting in a quick round of golf, etc., etc.
What was even worse is that they were allowed “flex” weeks - where they “worked” from home 10 hours a day for four days a week. So they just had to pretend to work 2 more hours.
I even knew someone who traveled out of the country for WEEKS to visit her sister, took her laptop with her, and never took a day of annual leave. Did a couple of hours of work online per day, then the rest of the day sightseeing.
Total racket.
As long as my 2 checks keep come'n from the GOV...I don't give a F !
This is why we don't have government shutdowns, we don't. We have government slow-downs.
Shouldn't we dispense with this nansy-pansy type of "partial" shutdown bull crap.
If Congress is going to shutdown the government than they should be required to actually shut it down. None of this "essential" work force bull shyte.
Shut it down and make it painful so that Congress will really hear from constituents.
Government workers (all of them) are sent home with no back pay for time missed. This includes EVERYONE.
  • Air Traffic Controllers get to stay on the job until aircraft have landed, no new flights are allowed to take off or enter American air space from other countries if they took off after the shutdown time. Shutdown all government airport and train operations.
  • FBI, Border Patrol, NSA, CIA, etc. - Go home. We'll call you to come back.
  • Government processing of financials stops.
  • No Social Security checks issued.
  • No Medicare checks issued.
  • No VA checks issued.
  • No pay for the military.
  • No pay for military retirees.
  • Payment to State and School districts for everything stops.
  • Federal Courts shut down.
  • Federal Prisons? Lock the inmates in their cell with a weeks worth of MRE's.
  • etc.
Congressional staff is sent home. The only ones allowed to work in the empty Capital Building are the actual members of Congress because under the Constitution their compensation cannot be reduced during their term of office so they are the only ones getting paid.
If a shutdown was a real shut down Congress would think twice before ignoring their responsibilities and pulling political stunts.
You do know that is wrong? The Senate is controlled by the GOP, BUT it is the Democrats who are shutting down the government through their filibuster.
The GOP can suspend the filibuster and don't need a single DEM vote.
White House:
Nice Swamp Ya Got There, Chuck. Shame If Something Happened to It.
25 Sep 2025 ~~ By Ed Morrissey
Two days ago, Chuck Schumer threatened Donald Trump with a good time. Now, the White House threatens to make the good time permanent. Literally.
The deadline for a government shutdown is fast approaching, and Schumer tried to play hardball this week. He and Hakeem Jeffries demanded a meeting with Trump to negotiate, which Trump initially accepted, but canceled after the pair demanded a massive list of concessions before the meeting took place. Schumer then told the press that Trump was "chicken" and that any shutdown would be his fault -- even though the House had already passed the clean CR that Schumer had demanded when Joe Biden was president-ish.
Of course, even with the spin, that stlll leaves Trump in charge of any shutdown. As I explained on Tuesday, that would give any aspiring swamp-draining president plenty of opportunity to hammer Democrats' constituencies, but even I may have underestimated Trump's ambition. The Wall Street Journal reports today that they will use any shutdown as an opportunity for permanent mass firings, not just furloughs:
~Snip~
Sharply raises the stakes"? You better believe it, Chuck. Vought makes clear, too, that the cuts will get targeted in accordance with Trump's priorities:
The OMB memo instructs agencies to design reduction-in-force plans for employees who work for programs that have no current funding and have no outside funding source, and that are “not consistent with the President’s priorities.” This would be in addition to any temporary furloughs that happen during a government shutdown.
The memo from Vought says that any cuts made after the funding deadline would be permanent.
Ahem. That's why Congress passes budgets -- to ensure that Congress controls spending and operations. If Schumer wants Trump to obey the "law," then the "law" has to exist in the first place. If the budget expires, then there is no statutory requirement to keep agencies and bureaus in operation. Schumer had it right in March, and he's playing into Trump's hands now. The only way to force Trump to operate is to pass the CR while the final budget gets negotiated.
Commentary:
The govt shutdown created by Schumer and Jefferies will allow Trump to permanently fire Govt employees. It’s not a short vacation this time with full back pay. The Govt employee Union will not allow it to happen.
If you are going to play a game of chicken, don’t blink.
For sure, Donald Trump won’t blink. Look you dead in the eye right up to the decision point. And down at you in the aftermath.
The Democrat Socialists of America led by Obama, Schumer and Jefferies have unleashed the whirlwind. Trump was just waiting for this opening, he knew it would come, eventually.
These schmucks are used to dealing with patsies, like Bush and traditional Rhinos'. This time will be different.
I'll take the opposite position. Go nuclear in the senate and ignore the minority. Majority rules.
If the House and senate are opposite parties then you need some form of compromise, probably with the president breaking the tie.
I referred to the House, which has no filibuster. It won't pass the House without Democrat support to offset the Republicans that are going to be primaried out of office next year.
It passed the House...
This morning the House passed its version of a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government funded past September 30. The vote was mostly party line at 217-212 with two Republicans voting no and one Democrat voting yes. The bill includes the "D.C. Fix" which restores funding the House took away in the last CR. It also includes extra funding for member security in light of the shooting of Charlie Kirk.
Democrats are not blameless in this scenario.
It's all tribal warfare.
It's not Democrats cutting peoples healthcare to give billionaires another tax cut.
There isn't a poll out there you can point to that has a majority of voters that supports it, and that includes Republicans.
Would you like for me to link some townhall events in some very red rural districts as a memory refresher from this past summer?
Republicans are going to lose the shut down fight, just like they lost the shut down fight in 2013, and every other time the government has shut down.
Tribal warfare not withstanding.
The GOP can suspend the filibuster and don't need a single DEM vote.
WW
They can, but there is a larger price to pay for that.
I'd tell them to change the filibuster and then pass the CR. Then change it back.
Either way, if they go that route, then the Democrats will do the same next time.
Either way, forcing these kinds of machinations lays the responsibility for a shutdown on Schumer and the democrats.
Nope, the GOP can pass the budget and don't need a single DEM vote.
They just have to man up and accept the consequences of moving the Senate to majority only. The status BTW that is in the Constitution. Nothing in the Constitution limits the passage of legislation to super majority.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing that requires a 2/3rds majority is passage of a Constitutional Amendment.
Nope. And we are now at the point of the conversation where you will not listen to anyone but yourself so I'll just point and laugh at you and them move on with My day.
Fact #1: The filibuster isn't in the Constitution.
Fact #2: The filibuster exists only within the rules of the Senate.
Fact #3: It takes only a simple majority to change/suspend the rules of the Senate.
Therefore the GOP can suspend the rules and pass a CR/Budget with a simple majority without a single DEM vote needed.
