The average life expectancy when Social Security was enacted was 60.
Social Security was intended for those who beat the odds. It was also slanted against blue collar workers. Ditch diggers and such. People who died younger or were too disabled to work until they were 65.
Today's labor is nowhere near as intensive as it was then.
You can retire early, at age 62, right now. But the average worker continues to work until 65. Most workers will be able to work until 70.
Again, we are on an unsustainable track. We can complain, or we can fix it one and for all.
We are living longer, we should be working longer.
