Ginormous petro-contaminated sinkhole in Louisiana

Matt, Fuck You. We would be eating shit were it not for hydrocarbons.

Agriculture could not exist today without fossil fuels and you know it, Dottie knows it, yet you both deny it.

Double the fucking fun.
No doubt fossil fuels have powered economic growth for over a century but that doesn't mean it will continue to do so in the 21st century. As the cost of fossil fuel production rises, the cost of producing alternative energy is falling. This may account for the 11% growth in private investment in alternative energy which was 267 billion dollars in 2012.

Both oil companies and alternative energy advocates agree that long-term consumption of fossil fuels is harmful to the planet. Fossil fuels are responsible for polluting the air and water and causing toxic wastes and harm both plants and animals. But where oil companies and alternative energy advocates typically part ways is over what to do next. It's not a question of should we transition to alternative energy but how.

HowStuffWorks "Are oil companies promoting alternative energy?"

There ARE no alternatives today for producing reliable electricity.. And the public hasnt begun to see the REAL COSTS of trying to push these limited techs like wind and solar to higher levels on the grid.. Cali is JUST NOW realized they need BILLIONS of dollars of short term storage just to prevent grid meltdown switching between generators..

Besides ----- its never been a choice between "alternatives and oil, because oil hardly produces ANY electricity... Even ethanol is not "an alternative to petrol, its merely a bad supplement.. Like wind and solar are to their fossil and nuclear bigger brothers on the grid.

It's not a question of should we transition to alternative energy but how.

Weve wasted a couple decades brainwashing the public and policymakers with the fairytale existence of "alternatives".. We need to get real and take steps to revive nuclear and build out fuel cell and hydrogen production for the transport part of the problem.. And stop repeating the same 30 year old false choices.. First step to progress beyond fossil is to be honest about the diff between alternatives and supplements.
I don't see wind and solar will ever replace the bulk of fossil fuel power generation. However, I think the percentage of power generation will continue to rise. Both wind and solar can be cost effective in some places. Fusion reactors may eventually be the answer or other technologies. Conversions to alternative energy sources is going to take a long long time.
