It will become harder to say no to EVs. Manufactures have started reducing the number of gas powered models and that will continue. As the number of sales of gasoline cars decreases, the prices will rise. Also the cost of licensing gasoline vehicles will rise as states and countries look for funds to combat global warming. The new technologies and features that make cars safer and more user friendly will be going into electric cars. By 2040, when GM and Ford stops all production of gas powered cars globally, the desirability of gasoline powered cars will be so low, there will be practically no demand for them.
The transition will be similar to the transition from horse drawn wagons to gasoline vehicles, the transition from incandescent bulbs to LEDs, and the transition from buses and trains to airlines for interstate travel. The government and other forces make the old technology less desirable while increasing the desirability of the new. As more people adopt the new technology, the features and the advantages relative to the old technology increases and that spurs more and more transitions.
