On Tuesday, Germany announced they are revoking certification for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a major project to import Russian gas into Europe, in retaliation for the Russian invasion of Ukraine — a move NATO has been threatening for weeks, and a serious threat to Russia's energy sector.

Good news. I hear the oligarchs are acting like these sanctions arent bothering them. I’m sure a few hundred billion should be no problem, right guys?

"WASHINGTON, May 19 (Reuters) - The Biden administration waived sanctions on the company behind Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany and its chief executive, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday, a move decried by critics of the project in Congress.

A State Department report sent to Congress concluded that Nord Stream 2 AG and its CEO, Matthias Warnig, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, engaged in sanctionable activity. But Blinken immediately waived those sanctions, saying that it was in the U.S. national interest."

Call me when they shut down the functioning pipelines shipping NG to Europe from Russia.

Yep. This was an agreement we made with Germany with the understanding that if Putin did anything like he is doing now, Germany would stop the pipeline from operating.

And now they have done so.

This is how it should work.

They just waved the sanctions a few months ago...the fact they couldn't see this coming isn't going to win them any points.

Yes, the US waved the sanctions a few months ago at the request of our ally Germany. We really have no right to tell an ally they cannot have a pipeline.

And part of that agreement with Germany was that they would do the very thing they are doing now if Russia did what they are doing now.

Symbolic move… this won’t stop the flow of Natural Gas and Oil from Russia to Europe. All it will do is make it more expensive for Europeans.

The word is "waived", Jarhead!

What is Russia doing now? Defending independent and sovereign nations doesn't sound illegal. I thought the US and NATO were going to apply sanctions if Russia invaded Ukraine. Sounds like semantic silliness over the West getting played. Unless someone has evidence that these independent nations have no legal authority to leave Ukraine, this looks like sour grapes.

Gas not flowing. Oligarchs that can’t go anywhere. Assets frozen.

Righties in denial over their love of the enemy being restricted. This is only the beginning. It’s only going to get worse.

For what? What laws had Russia violated? Do you fools not see what's happening here? If we just throw around sanctions like children throwing toys in a tantrum, we diminish ourselves and the purpose of sanctions. We diminish the rule of law. That is not how superpowers lead.

What is even more important, the EU's energy dependent industry will migrate to the USA with higher NG prices and political and military instability in Europe.

It's not about laws. It's not even about Russia. It's about Europe and American profits. Start another European war (may be only trade war), collapse their economy, make America great again.

Hold on…

The stopped a future pipeline and you believe this is hurting Russia right now?

As a few posters have stated if you want to hurt Putin and Russia turn off the one that is flowing but you will not address this and just want to troll the right with asinine childish comments as usual.

So tell us Skew how does stopping a future pipeline really hurt Putin in today times and let forget about possible future at this point?

Lets hope biden and the germans stay the course

There are many non military ways to punish the russians and I hope we use them all

but the risk is that after a few months the economists in germany take over and resistance to putin fades
