It's clean, abundant, and right under our feet. Also the technology is in place in many places, Iceland for one.

Geothermal systems harness heat from the Earth to generate reliable, low-emission electricity, with significant potential for future energy needs.

Overview

Geothermal energy is derived from the heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. This energy can be used for both electricity generation and direct heating applications. Unlike solar or wind energy, geothermal power provides a consistent and reliable energy source, operating 24/7 with minimal environmental impact.

Technologies

  1. Dry Steam Power Stations: These plants use steam directly from geothermal reservoirs to turn turbines and generate electricity.
  2. Flash Steam Power Stations: High-pressure hot water is brought to the surface, where it flashes into steam to drive turbines.
  3. Binary Cycle Power Stations: These systems transfer heat from geothermal water to a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point, which vaporizes and drives a turbine.

Current

As of recent reports, geothermal power generation is utilized in 26 countries, with a global capacity of approximately 15.4 gigawatts (GW). The United States accounts for about 23.9% of this capacity, making it a significant player in the geothermal energy sector. Countries like El Salvador, Kenya, and Iceland generate more than 15% of their electricity from geothermal sources, showcasing its viability as a renewable energy source.

Future

Geothermal energy is poised for growth, with estimates suggesting it could meet 10% of the U.S. electricity demand and up to 15% of global electricity needs by 2050. Recent advancements in technology and increased investment—such as the $1.7 billion in public funding for North American geothermal installations in early 2025—indicate a strong future for this energy source.

Environmental

Geothermal power is considered a sustainable and renewable energy source, with greenhouse gas emissions averaging only 45 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour, significantly lower than conventional fossil fuels. This makes it an attractive option for reducing carbon footprints and combating climate change.

In conclusion, geothermal systems represent a promising avenue for electric power generation, combining reliability, sustainability, and significant potential for future energy needs. As technology advances and investments increase, geothermal energy is likely to play a crucial role in the global energy landscape.

AI Summary

Imperial Valley has faced challenges with toxic geothermal waste management. The region, known for its geothermal energy production, has encountered issues related to the disposal of toxic byproducts.

Geothermal Energy Production

  • The Imperial Valley is home to several geothermal power plants that harness heat from the Earth to generate electricity.
  • This process produces waste, including heavy metals and other toxic substances.
Environmental Concerns

  • Concerns have been raised about the potential contamination of soil and water sources due to improper disposal of geothermal waste.
  • Local communities and environmental groups have expressed worries about health risks associated with exposure to these toxins.

I haven't looked into Geothermal much - will give it a look.

I know India and China have made big strides with thorium reactors.

The Establishment, nor leftists in general, really don't have any interest in actually finding abundant, cheap energy.

The goal is money, political power, and controlling resources. That is best achieved by artificially manufacturing shortages, increasing the costs of production and distribution thru excessive regulation, and managing the crises that result.

It is a very successful and reliable formula, and the people fall for it every time.

Geothermal is not viable because it requires a custom designed plant for each geothermal source.

The physical, the chemical characteristics of each geothermal well are unique.

Geothermal is a grand experiment. As a source of commercia electricity it is a 100% failure
