This should probably be moved to conspiracy theories. Its the old "Reagan made a deal with the Iranians to keep the hostages until after the election" story.

Ridiculous, of course. Anyone familiar with dynamics of negotiation could have told you that the hostage situation would have ended when it did without Reagan or Bush needing to do anything to negotiate behind Carter's back.

Carter made some huge negotiation blunders to begin with. He let the other side know how important this was to him by negotiating himself for example. If he was being a shrewd negotiator he would have sent some underlings to do it.

The other side were shrewd negotiators. Their best prospects to get as much as they wanted would have been to make a deal before the election. They realized Carter needed a win to win the election and that he would be willing to give more than he might otherwise to get it.

Once the election occured and Reagan won, the dynamics of the negotiations switched again. Now Carter had nothing to lose and the Iranians had everything to lose if a deal wasnt made before Reagan took over. The Iranians had a time line to deal with now. Either deal with Carter now and get what they could or let Reagan take over and get nothing.

Of course, Hindsight is 20/20.

What difference does it make how long he was in office?

Reagan made it clear he intended to take military action against the Iranians if they didn't release the hostages. Carter made it clear that he was a spineless appeaser.
