Why do we want a powerful speaker? The speaker of the house represents one district in California, not the entire nation. Why should McCarthy be more powerful than the representative from my district?

Sure, seniority will naturally gain a representative a lot of influence, and the natural advantage of incumbancy will mean that some representatives will gain a lot of seniority. Nothing much to do about that kind of unofficial power, but there is no reason to enshrine such power in the rules of congress.
