Fun, low $ things to do in Vegas & Hollyweird?

We will be in Vegas 8/20-8/26

I know the typical stuff to do, but i want to know about fun, obscure things to do that aren't a whole lotta $.

We are taking a day (maybe 2) to go to Hollywood/Los Angeles/Beverly Hills just too look around.

Being the small-town white girl from Anoka, Mn, I also need to know which areas to avoid and such. I don't want to end up on the news.
