Many in the enviropnmental community are saying they are lying through their teeth, that the radioactive pollution is already effecting the entire Pacific and....

they don't really know what the hell to do about it!

I don't think that the Japanese are telling the half of it. Right now it appears that they have no good way to move the rod, and cannot leave them where they are at.

According to TEPCO, one of the damaged fuel assemblies is bent at a 90-degree angle [literal meaning: bent in the shape of a Japanese character "く"; actual angle could be less]. It was bent 25 years ago when a mistake occurred in handling the fuel.

They can leave the 3 bent rods while they move the other 1530. After they clear the pool, they can force the last 3 out. Since they're older rods, decay heat and radiation from them are minimal. Even if the rods cracked, radiation release would be minimal, since the fuel pellets never melted. The only real issue is why Tepco failed to report it at the time.

Now sure what to believe but there are some analysts out there that have been painting a catastrophic scenario, and not only for Japan!

Well, allready had some pretty solid exposure in the mid-50's when we in Eastern Oregon got some fallout from a test in Nevada. Like asbestos, radiation is not a death sentence for most. It just increases your chances, and out of a population x people, y more people will develop cancer than would otherwise. With the increased cost to society of caring for these people, and the loss of their productivity.

Overall, in all the nations affected, a worse case scenerio could be millions of premature deaths, with billions to trillions in cost to the nations affected. A worse case scenerio, but thus far, Fukushima keeps looking like that is a possibility.

The questions to ask are HOW higher are the rads coming off the fish, and WHAT isotopes are in prevalence.

Radiation is impossible to hide, someone off the coast of Japan with a geiger counter could see spikes or an increased baseline. If there is an increase, it is probably minimal.

How do you define minimal? With the asbestos, it was defined as the people that ran the companies did not get exposed to it, so only the people on the factory floor died. Nothing to be concerned about. That was the definition then. What is the definition now for radiation from this disaster?

Yep......I get that. But this whole fuel rod extraction appears to be highly risky and as Ray says, worse case scenario is a catastrophy like the world has never seen.

How? For this to be worse the rods would have to somehow disintigrate and then be dispersed as particulates, that would require an explosion, and an explosion at this point would require the rods to achive a critical mass of fissile isotopes.

I dont see that happening.

Radiation is defined by dose, and dose over what is normal background, and what type of radiation there is. Of course defining cancer risk is just that, a risk expercise, but acute radation effects are far more well known.

When the inital radiation increase was noted in the pacific, except in the area right by the plant, it was in amounts that were scientifically noticable, but not anywhere near levels of concern.

Note the lack of debris in the pool. Yes, there was debris, so ... they removed it! What a concept!

Note the lack of warping.

Note the lack of corrosion. No, seawater does not instantly corrode the fuel bundles. Zirconium is extremely resistant to seawater corrosion, and the rods are not going to crumble.

gotta click the link s0n........but its kinda funny. We all come in here and debate something that might or night not happen every day ( climate change ) and there are some who see Fukishima as an unprecedented catastrophy that is simply going to get worse and worse.

Nuclear fallout cannot be covered up. Anyone with a Geiger counter can detect radioactive particles in excess of normal background radiation. And this is not talking about a scientifically noticeable but medically insignificant increase in radiation from a certain isotope. Modern detection methods can see doses of radiation far below damaging levels, but above levels compared to background.

All that matters is doses at or above those of risk. saying something is "5 times background level" is meaningless if that level has no adversive impact.
