From say, 1970 to 1990. Anyone remember that format? Low budget low watt stations on whatever frequency...little or no sponsors, they would play any kind of music, the AM stations shut down at sundown...I hear this guy yesterday and I had flashbacks to 1979...

What music have you just discovered that you never heard before and found by surprise and loved? Don't be afraid, this is the freeform music thread.

I first heard this on freeform radio in 1978...it blew me away.

Tom Petty wrote a song called The Last DJ, on the album of the same name. It was about a DJ who became so frustrated with his inability to play what he wants that he moves to Mexico and gets his freedom back.

There are some who think the DJ in the song is a guy named Jim Laad. I used to listen to him on a radio station in California when I lived out there. He is one of the last free form DJs around...
