In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any other.

Franklin knew that man's nature prevents him from eventually not destroying himself, and the key to it all is man's inner morality.

You either have a society where men are moral who are able to discipline themselves to live up to a moral code, or you will have government force you to live up to a moral code. The first society men have freedom, the second society you have tyranny.

When society has the morality of a jail house, all you can do then is hire a warden to try and maintain civility.

That is why the Left is at war with morality and good sense, it is because they inherently know it will lead to totalitarianism.

The US is undergoing a constitutional crisis and I stumbled upon an article where someone noted that Benjamin Franklin foresaw a future where the country would fall into despotism, I find that interesting and thought others might too, so I dug out the record of the meeting where he said that.
