The Cossacks were a proud people. They were going to certain death. They sang in one of their songs: we have to choose one of two things - life or death, shame or freedom. They could not submit to the Russians, it was a shame for them. They despised them.
The same goes for Apaches. They fought with three empires and did not give up
The Dzungars, the ancestors of the Hungarians during the Manchu invasion, behaved in the same way. They were squeezed in the vice of 2 or 3 empires, with huge masses of slaves. But they didn't give up.
These are amazing heroic peoples of the steppe, descendants of the Indo-Aryans. They were always outnumbered and they always won or died in combat.
The winged hussars, and the knights, and all the equestrian peoples also behaved so.
