I used to live near the Southern Pacific tracks through San Timoteo Canyon in Southern California in the days when steam locomotives made their way up and down the long grade. There was nothing in the world to compare with listening to the long, mournful whistle as they approached the various crossings. I don't know how big a ridership this will get but I'd love to be within hearing when it comes to crossings. Story @ Flying Scotsman's mainline return after £4.2m revamp - BBC News

(Okay, I know this is a European story but the technology is something else)

These old steam locomotives have so much charm.
