Because they don't care. I suspect many of them wish they could do it.

I got paddled by Mr. Hines, he was literally 6'4" and used both hands. I still remember the holes in the paddle, it was all wood, and about the size of a small cutting board. I was careful not to let anyone at home see the brusies as I didn't want any drama coming from it. It had no ill effects on my life and it got me back on track in school.

Teacher communication to the parent:

Marull sent Alachua Chronicle her correspondence with the teacher, including this response from the teacher: “I do apologize that [your son] was offended by the Class Superlative. Class Superlatives are an activity I have been doing with all my classes for the last four years. I give students the option to change or add superlatives to the list from previous years and then the class nominates students and votes on the winner. I was not aware that [your son] was upset that he was nominated for that superlative a few weeks ago. To my knowledge, he did not ask to be removed when he was nominated or when the class voted. When I passed them out today, I reiterated that they were just for fun. These were not meant to be offensive. I do apologize.”

Walt was in this camp before taking a hellship to Japan. He told me he could not talk about the march or his captivity because it would trigger flashbacks at night, but he read the book, and he served with some of the POW's mentioned in the book, the same NG unit from Chicago. The beatings they regularly endured was just horrible to imagine.

This is back when men were men.
