Putin and Medvedev don't want war any more than the USA does but want power, prestige, prosperity as much as any others do. I can't imagine them ever taking on NATO or just the USA unless they felt compelled they had to do that in their own interests. I believe they would much rather have us for trading partners. Nevertheless they are a nuclear power and expansionist minded and all should be concerned about that.

And Trump is committed to achieving world peace and strongly discouraging armed conflicts. His goal is to stop the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine and restore peace, not just heap more fuel on it.

Nevertheless, Trump believes in peace through strength, and he is certainly as interested in cooperative defense as any other country. But he is sick and tired of other countries benefitting from our defensive systems and protection but not paying their fair share for the cooperative defense efforts.

Knowing that and realizing Trump may be President again, it would be a good thing for NATO countries to expect to do more in their own self defense interests

We already invest enough in European defense, we have other places around the world that also require our attention.

If European countries are not willing to invest in their own defense and the defense of their neighbors, it must not be that important to them. Register your grievance with Germany and France et al.

NATO is not committed to a Ukraine victory. NATO is committed to bleeding Russia for as long as possible regardless of the cost to Ukraine. The opportunity to drive Russia out of Ukraine was in the fall of 2022, and NATO chose not to do that. Instead, NATO adopted a policy of keeping Ukraine fighting, in the hope that Russia would get tired of the war and just go home.

That does not seem very likely, at least in the near term...
