As I mentioned in another thread, the Grand Sumo Tournament in Nagoya just wrapped up. It was a great tourney, with lots of very close matches. The whole show ended with a relatively rare play off by the two reigning Yokozuna. Hakuho - who is basically the Babe Ruth of Sumo - lost a hard fought match against fellow Mongolian Kakuryu for the title (and lots and lots of $$$$).

As I also mentioned previously, many of the matches can be found on youtube.

Is there a single competition that crowns the "world champion" or anything comparable?

The Grand Sumo Tournament (6 per year) is that. No other sumo competition anywhere is even remotely in the same discussion.
