Final Report is out on Ramp Worker Engine Fatality

I used to work for DuPont at an automotive paint plant and every effort was made to mitigate fire potential for obvious reasons. We even used very expensive beryllium tools and wore Nomex clothing.

Kiss my ass if I didn't see someone mopping the floor with solvent.....WTF!

I asked about it and the worker said supervisor so-and-so said it was OK.

I asked about it at a safety meeting the next day and they looked at me like I had a third eye!

GTG they said.....WTF?

Not a month later a worker was mopping the floor and the mop caught on fire (in a big way as the bucket of solvent also caught fire) and lucky for her there was a fire extinguisher just feet away and she put it out without any damage.

Similar story a coworker told me about his friend who worked in a machine shop and they had a fire and there was a bucket with some type of clesr solvent in it, some dumbass thought it was water and he threw it on the fire, which turned it into an inferno. My former co-workers friend had both legs burned badly and spends a lifetime of trying to keep his skin flexible on his legs.

My former employer took safety extremely seriously, and you really did not want to get a recordable injury (one that required a follow up medical visit) because you could be fired for it if you were negligent. They fired people for safety violations where no injury occurred.

Yep, same with DuPont.

Of course, the practice was ended.....Spot cleaning with solvent only after that.

The shift supervisor (the one that said it was GTG) was not fired but he was transferred to DuPont's "punishment site" in Tonawanda, NY, off of Lake Erie.

They would send them there so they would resign instead of firing them.

Wondering why? ;)
